Madonna and Child with St John the Baptist
This painting is from the chapel at the Ribnica Castle. Three illuminated figures – Mary seated, Jesus standing, and John the Baptist kneeling – are arranged in a pyramid before an idyllic natural background. The figures are united by strong emotional bonds, which the painter depicted with their gazes, arms, and postures. The children are facing one another and Mary’s arms are draped around them as she watches them lovingly. A lamb is lying by her foot. Mary’s garb stands out with its bright red and blue, contrasted by the dark green of the background and the deeper blue of the sky, making for a striking foil to the bare, chubby bellies of the children’s bodies. As the older child by half a year, John the Baptist is depicted as larger and he is holding in his hand a staff in the shape of a cross with a banner hanging from it reading Ecce Agnus Dei (Behold the Lamb of God). Metzinger took the painting’s central composition from a painting by Guido Reni in 1606 (at the Louvre), which was broadly copied and embellished with imprinting. He transferred the scene from indoors to outside, emphasizing the idyllic familial bonds.
