Saint Margaret with Dragon
The statue by an anonymous sculptor and of unknown provenance shows St Margaret of Antioch, one of the fourteen intercessors in distress; together with St Barbara and St Catherine they form a group of three holy virgins. According to legend, St Margaret was tortured and imprisoned for her faith, and a dragon appeared to her one night in her jail and tried to devour her. When she made a gesture of the cross, the dragon disappeared. Based on this legend, a dragon always appears as an attribute in her depictions. St Margaret is the patron saint of girls and women in childbirth.
