The composition and staffage figures of this painting are strongly reminiscent of Sea Coast with Ancient Architecture and Peasants, which is kept in the Narodna galerija in Ljubljana (Cat. No. 108). However, the treatment of some details, especially the mountains on the left, is rather superficial and suggests the intervention of the painter’s workshop. The staffage figures are very lively, they recall the figures in the paintings of the Roman bamboccianti and Luca Carlevarijs. The depiction of the sky is modelled on Salvatore Rosa.

Provenance: Collection of the counts of Attems in their castle in Slovenska Bistrica until confiscation in 1945, then taken to Ljubljana, to the FCC, and entered into the FCC register under No. 6330 (130) as “City by the Sea, oil on canvas, 139 x 85 cm (sic!), 18C”. 1951 transferred to the ALU for the planned gallery, then lent to the SAZU to furnish the Academy’s rooms.
