St John the Baptist
The statue shows a half-naked figure of St John the Baptist, standing in contrapposto and looking at his right hand holding his symbol – a scallop shell which he used in the baptism of Jesus. He can also be recognized from his modest clothing of camel’s hair which represents his ascetic life in the desert. He is depicted as a young man in an elegant poise, wearing a beard and lengthy hair.
The wooden Baroque statue was painted white in accordance with the new historicist aesthetic ideals and with the intention to imitate marble.
The statue is a work by an anonymous, yet high-quality Baroque sculptor.
