A number of dead animals – two hares, a pheasant and some birds – are depicted in a forest with a spaniel and a greyhound. This is a distinctly decorative painting designed for some aristocrat’s hunting lodge. The dogs are probably reminiscent of similar paintings from the 17th century, painted in the Flemish Antwerp circle after models by Frans Snyders and Paul de Vos.
Stylistically the painting is very akin to canvases which we attribute to Giovanni Crivelli, but the differences in the brushwork and in the modelling of the animals point to his father Angelo Maria Crivelli. We must not forget that two painters often collaborated on a painting, which makes it rather difficult to distinguish between individual artistic contributions.
