Girl in a Red Waistcoat
This study belongs among the series of works painted by Kobilca in the mid-1880s when she was still a pupil at Alois Erdtelt’s school of painting in Munich. The palette remains earthy and Kobilca, who mainly painted head-and-shoulders and half-length portraits, has focused on the physiognomy of the head and the glow of the melancholy blue eyes. Kobilca painted this girl on at least one other occasion (Kobilca 2018, list of works No. 50, perhaps also No. 49).
