Grandmother Sewing
It seems that most of Jurij Šubic’s motifs of contemporary peasant genre originate from his holiday adventure in Normandy in 1882. There are drawings of kitchen interiors and a few small probably outdoor paintings that include a gardener at work, a thatched stable, an orchard and a panoramic view over the village roofs with a train in the distance. An old woman, a grandmother sewing, belongs to the group but also stands out. Sitting by an open window the figure is bathed in bright sunlight satiated by lush greenery and scents of the garden. This is a quick study in a small format, painted on the spot, thus allowing the painter a greater freedom in execution. Although Šubic used an exclusively descriptive palette, his brushstroke takes on an independence rarely seen. At the same time we can admire the suggestive power of brushstrokes that define shapes, volumes and textures with extraordinary economy. This is how the artist observed and studied a natural phenomenon which he included on a larger scale in a studio painting.
