Still Life with Pots
Still Life with Pots, formerly known as Interior with Tools and Pots, is the only painting of its type in the collection of Janez Šubic held by the National Gallery. The left side of the painting shows various vessels for storing food and tools, with the smaller ones arranged on a shelf and the larger ones standing on the floor. Among them are a watering can, a barrel and a pot-bellied jug, with a pair of slippers placed next to it. A wood-chopping block completes this group of objects. On the right of the painting, cast in shadow, a set of fireplace tools can be discerned leaning against the wall. In the centre of the painting, simple work clothes are hung from the top, which the painter has rendered as a shimmering cascade of drapery. An axe hangs next to the clothes, waiting to be used again, like all the objects that have been quietly put away. Although the painting is in a small format, the objects depicted are monumental in their simplicity. The still life was created when the artist had returned from Rome and was going through a deep crisis, which he spent in solitude and in difficult circumstances at his home in Poljane nad Škofjo Loko.
