Sts Cosmas and Damian

As Jurij Šubic finished his frescoes in St. James’s Church in Ljubljana, 1886, he was inundated with commissions from all over the Slovenian provinces. Among them were three large altar paintings for the parish church in Osilnica. The Virgin survives in a robust copy that has taken its place, while The Epiphany and Saints Cosmas and Damian entered the collection of the National Gallery of Slovenia after they had been replaced by copies commissioned from Matej Sternen. Allegedly, Jurij Šubic painted Saints Cosmas and Damian overnight. He usually approached such tasks pragmatically using models of contemporary religious art, however the distance from historically tested compositions is substantial. He had to recompose The Epiphany in order to fit a horizontally stretched narrative within a tall and relatively narrow format using live models. With the two biblical healers he had to fill in vertical format with the triumphant gesture of Damian’s arm raising the crucifix towards the sky. He made use of perhaps the oldest iconic composition of the twins with medical instruments in their hands, identified in mediaeval iconography by a pyxis and a glass urinal. Otherwise, the choreography of their arms and hands, manifesting the triumph of the martyrs’ faith, seems his own invention. The martyrs of Syria are dressed in Damascus style costume studied from live models that suits the precepts of the realist aesthetics.
