The Painter Desrivières with His Mother in a Studio
Painters Gabriel Desrivières and his mother Elisa invited Jurij Šubic to their estate in the vicinity of Ouézy in Normandy in August 1882. Jurij was for the first time able to concentrate on his own interests exclusively and think about his artistic career. There he conceived his Salon painting Before the Hunt, exhibited with some success the following year. The image of the two painters was probably painted there during their vacation period and is very interesting because of its ambience. The two painters are sitting side by side in what seems to be an enclosed space based on the dark brown tonal range of palette. We know very little about their work but Gabriel was an adherent to the naturalist school and his own entry to the same Salon shows his views of painting were very close to those of Jurij Šubic. Šubic captured a moment of intense concentration on studio work. Painting outdoors, en plein air, was not a rule to them but an approach of choice instigated by opportunity.
