Zasavska Sveta gora
Zasavska Sveta gora (Sveta gora nad Litijo) is a hill on the left bank of the Sava River, home to the pilgrimage Church of the Birth of Mary. The church is surrounded by strong walls, which used to serve as a defense against Turkish invaders, and it has a bell tower, which similarly served as a defensive tower. The peak of Sveta Gora offers breathtaking views of the hills in Posavje, all the way from Snežnik past the Julian Alps up to the nearby Kamnik–Savinja Alps. The painter was a soldier by profession, specifically a military cartographer at an institute with the same purpose in Vienna, and a lieutenant colonel in Vienna’s Imperial-Royal Guard division. His duties saw him develop intimate knowledge of Slovene lands during military exercises and he recorded his impressions in sketchbooks. Alongside documenting Slovenia’s natural and cultural beauty, he also produced several landscape works, all done with cartographical precision and attention to detail.
