A Girl (Suzanica)

Franc Berneker was an excellent portraitist and devoted himself to portraiture in his student years. His oeuvre is marked by numerous portraits of clients, patrons, children and important figures. In the first decade of the 20th century, he created a series of portraits in Vienna. His marble portraits are a fine expression of his artistic strengths and skills. By adopting Secession-style elements, he imparted a unique tenderness, dreaminess and grace to his realist portraits.

The figure is portrayed frontally. The girl’s graceful face is rendered softly and delicately, with her hair tied in a crown braid. The viewer’s gaze is drawn to the partially exposed chest, where the sheer tunic has slipped from the girl’s right shoulder. The scene combines innocence, reserve and eroticism, alluding to the sculpture’s subtitle that was included at the Jakopič Pavilion exhibition in 1912.
