Dürnstein I

Jama moved to Dürnstein just before the beginning of 1911. His Village in Winter (Vas v zimi, NG S 1407) was painted around the corner of his apartment building, and a year later was repeated with a view across the river from the right bank of the Danube in the vicinity of Rossatz. In the interim, the artist painted several vernal scenes with panoramas of the church and of the castle below, perched above the town on a hill. The painter shunned the bustle of the crowded tourist points and the flocks of artists as he sought his motifs throughout the town and on the Danube’s banks. In terms of motif, Dürnstein I bears a striking resemblance to a contemporary panoramic postcard, which helps us identify the vantage point among the vineyards just a stone’s throw from the urban center. Jama’s broad strokes transformed it into an impression of spring, embellishing the lush foliage of humid May with gentle purple and light-green hues. The early-morning sun sketches the stark outlines of roofs and the church tower on the river’s surface. The color palette and the fragmented composition are reminiscent of the pointillist technique used in his Flowers on the Windowsill (Cvetlice na Oknu) and the even earlier From Laxenburg I (Iz Laksenburga I), which can also be found among Jakopič’s landscape paintings from around 1912.
