Group with Unicorn
Lojze Dolinar was a representative of the realist monumental sculpture of the interwar period and author of monumental free-standing and architectural sculptures. His rich oeuvre encompasses a variety of styles, ranging from academic realism, symbolism, Secession, picturesque Impressionism and neo-Baroque approaches to Expressionist sculpture and programmatic Socialist Realism. He focused intensely on monumental architectural sculpture and monuments, producing great Socialist Realist monumental sculptures that drew on both ancient and contemporary examples. His portraits, nudes and dynamic figural compositions are based on the contrast between smooth and rough surface treatment and characterised by disproportionate body proportions.
After completing his training at the Ljubljana Arts and Crafts School with sculptor Alojzij Repič, Dolinar continued his studies at the academies in Vienna (1910/1911) and Munich (1912/1913). His sculptural composition Group with Unicorn was created after he graduated from the Munich Academy and returned to Ljubljana. The work, which depicts a group of graceful neo-Baroque fauns and a female figure standing next to a unicorn, is modelled in the dynamic, picturesque, impressionistic manner of Rodin.
