Marija Zorman

In 1917 the sculptor Lojze Dolinar was called up to the army and sent to Judenburg. Between 1912 and 1917 he had lived in Ljubljana. In this period he created portraits of important figures from Slovene cultural life in his studio. In 1920 Dolinar became a member of the National Gallery Society and his works, which were among the gallery’s first acquisitions, were included in the National Gallery’s inaugural hanging. Ivan Zorman (1889–1969) was the first president of the National Gallery Society and served as the director of the National Gallery until 1950. He remained at the head of the National Gallery for 32 years.

In 1884 Janez Zorman married Marija Dolinar (1860–1911) of Zadobrova. Together they had five children. Shortly after the death of his brother Anton, Ivan Zorman commissioned sculptor Lojze Dolinar to create portraits of him and their mother Marija Zorman, on the basis of a photograph. Her bust stands close to the tall pedestal supporting the head of Anton Zorman (NG P 853) and her face is turned to the right, towards her son. Her stylised hair shows the influence of Art Nouveau and, indeed, the sculpture as a whole possesses the soft formal characteristics of Art Nouveau and an elegaic mood.
