Jakopič did not seek out rural themes for his figurative art unless they added a special symbolic gravitas to his work, such as in The Sower (Sejalec) of 1905. His white-clad urban dames among the trees are symbolistically underpinned. But in this small studio work, it is impossible to discern such symbolic content. In its content and character, this small painting is closer to his Breeze (Sapica), painted somewhere around Stranska Vas in 1905. Two female figures, dressed in all white, are sitting in the shade under the trees. The painting combines dynamic brush strokes with a somewhat subdued palette, highlighting the experience of the seclusion form afternoon heat on a warm summer’s day. Jakopič portrayed the female forms with convincing abreviation. The motif is otherwise a personal interpretation of a scheme that was a popular theme in Munich’s secession circles. In this first impression study, the genre scene remains but the fleeting impression of a purely experiential motif. The intensely expressive manner of painting reveals it as a truly emotional experience.
