Wrestlers
The dynamic composition of the pyramidal group of three male figures, who are either wrestling each other, as the title would suggest, or working together to pull a rope, can be interpreted in different ways. The popular motifs of fighters, wrestlers, fishermen and toilers allow the sculptor to accentuate the muscular forms of male figures during physical exertion.
Berneker’s figural group composition Wrestlers (1910) is modelled in the dynamic, picturesque manner. Sonja Žitko compares Wrestlers with the sculpture titled Invincibles by the Russian sculptor Teresa Feodorowna Ries (1876–1950) from around 1903.
