A Dog and Game | Narodna galerija

Beside a spaniel and an unidentified big dead decorative bird on a step in front of a hunting gun are two woodpeckers. On the ground, from right to left, lie two rock partridges, a duck, a tomtit and two finches (a male and a female). Rock partridges live in a fairly narrow zone of Europe, which stretches from northern Italy across the former Yugoslavia and Greece to Bulgaria. In this case the partridges too support the idea that this is a northern Italian work, which we attribute to the painter Giovanni Crivelli.

Provenance: Collection of the Counts of Attems, Slovenska Bistrica; confiscated and taken to the FCC in 1945, No. 6425 (in the FCC register, p. 207, No. 6425, the size is given as 130 x 90 cm); the painting was apparently taken to the seat of the Slovene Writers’ Association by the author Mira Mihelič and it remained in the rooms there until 1995, when the Association gave it to the Narodna galerija for exhibition.
