This painting is in all probability an allegory of Innocence, which 18th century Venetian painters often depicted as a girl pressing a white dove to her breast: the most famous example of such a motif is the miniature on ivory by Rosalba Carriera in the Galleria dell’Accademia di San Luca in Rome.
The style of the painting is characteristic of Nogari, its composition and psychological emphases are reminiscent of the waist-length figures which the painter produced in considerable numbers and which brought him fame among his contemporaries. Although the surface of the painting is slightly damaged, there is no reason not to recognise it as the work of the painter’s own hand.
