This is one of the most important of Pietro Tempesta’s landscapes. Its monumental dimensions and the carefully considered composition give us an exceptional perception of the different streams which influenced the artist’s work. While the left side of the painting with its view far into the distance to the hills and mountains is modelled on Gaspard Dughet, the almost pre-Romantic atmosphere of the right side reveals a knowledge of Salvatore Rosa, the motif of leaning trees with a broken branch in the middle of the picture obviously derives from the works of Pier Francesco Mola and other 17th century Roman painters. In Graz there is a variant of this painting (127 x 166 cm, Joanneum, Alte Galerie, Inv. No. 612) with many differences in details. It is attributed to the Flemish painter Lukas Achtschellinck.
