The saint is painted as a penitent with a small cross and a lion at his side. In the background lies a wide landscape with a big tree on the right and snow-capped mountains in the distance. The style is typical of Mola’s late period, as regards both the form and the manner of painting. The trees too suggest this master – Mola often painted such trees – as a motif they are taken from Titian’s masterpiece The Death of Saint Peter the Martyr painted between 1525 and 1530, which hung in the church of SS Giovanni e Paolo in Venice; it became famous soon after it had been painted and was the most frequently copied work by Titian; it was destroyed by fire in 1867.
