This canvas was cut on all but the left side. The painting must have included other objects as well. Today we see a wicker flask, a chalice-like glass, a bunch of asparagus, an artichoke and other vegetables, an apple and an upturned copper bowl. At the right the background is open to a landscape. Although the painting was considerably damaged, the composition and the choice of objects recall the work of Tommaso Salini (Rome ca. 1575–1625). We can, for example, compare it to Still Life with Mushrooms, Fruit, Vegetables and a Wicker Flask, which is attributed to Salini. This is in an Italian private collection and was published in Natura morta in Italia, Milan 1989, p. 709.
It could be that this still life is based on a Salini prototype, but it is by another hand of a later generation.
