Still Life with Fish, a Mortar and Vegetables
Arranged on a kitchen table are a copper mortar, a bunch of asparagus, a vegetable leaf, a pumpkin, two fish, a knife and a cutting board. – The style of the painting is based on the still lifes of the German school, but earlier and still more elaborate, than, for example, the works attributed to Franz Friedrich Franck, who depicted copper kitchenware (two paintings in the Städtische Kunstsammlung, Augsburg, Inv. Nos. 5154 and 5155).– Still Life with Fish, a Copper Pot and Vegetables, oil on canvas, 42.2 x 59.6 cm, in private ownership, Ljubljana, is by the same artist as the picture in the Gallery, and there are said to be several more privately owned in Switzerland.
