Kamntnik in the Rain
Another theme that united Jakopič, Matej Sternen and the photographer Avgust Berthold was a path or farming bed rapidly receding deep into space, cut off by a hill or a hayrack. Kamnitnik in Rain is a spring version of a winter motif believed to have been Jakopič’s first reaction to the exhibition Impressionism in Painting and Sculpture in which he tried to recreate Monet’s improvised technique of the 1890s. Painted with brush instead of palette knife, the areas of pink, green, and yellow colours, overhung by a grey-blue sky in Kamnitnik in Rain, are more integrated. The excited brushwork is keen to a kind of expressive handwriting. The painting is a good indicator of the painter’s choice of tools to suit his purpose. Jakopič managed to recreate the feeling of the soggy landscape under a spring shower, thus striking another “Stimmung”, an objective well proven in his early work in Škofja Loka.
