The Rapids

Ferdo Vesel took part in the Yugoslav Art Colony organized by Nadežda Petrovič at her family estate in Sićevo, South-eastern Serbia in 1905. He admired the landscape, the folk costumes and the people, writing enthusiastic postcards to his friends.  Although he kept mainly in the company of the younger generation of the impressionist painters, this painting shows the unbridgeable differences that had crystallized by 1905. Vesel remained a painter of equivalences, using a descriptive palette and insisting on drawing as the basic elements of his painting process. He captured the bottom of the Nišava Gorge close-up in contrasting light and shadow. However, his optics are concrete, focused on identification of colour and tones to transfer into painting. He produced a field image of modest format, painted on paper in which he succeeded in preserving the freshness and immediacy of the impression, but did it by exactness of the studied materiality and clearly outlined shapes. Vesel was convinced that the world could exist only as he saw it and that the objectivity of sight could not be called into doubt.
