Trnovo
In the mid 1920-ies, Jakopič began producing a series of paintings featuring the course of the Gradaščica River, along with the trees dotting its banks and the outline of Trnovo’s church in the background. These paintings both in form and color palette were heavily reflective of expressionist influence, which was the hallmark of the young generation of artists working after WW I. Despite being from the same surroundings, this painting is somewhat earlier, and we can link it in color and ambiental effect to his pre-war impressions. In the early light, our view is cast past a pooling in the river towards the bright horizon of the cool morning, in the center of which the distant silhouette of the Trnovo church’s two towers are embedded. The water’s surface reflects the low rays of the morning sun. Jakopič stripped the panoramic view of actual features, replacing them with effects of light and modulated complementary color contrasts and creating the extraordinary visual effect of the breaking day. The lyrical mood equates nature with the human presence within it, forming a zen-like and harmonious image of the world.
