Winter Morning
Thanks to their glowing character and bright colour scale, winter landscapes were particularly popular with the impressionists. Grohar painted Winter Morning at the time when he, together with the painters Rihard Jakopič and Matej Sternen, was active in the environs of Škofja Loka. Before the company joined, each of them had already made his first steps. They sojourned in Škofja Loka and its surroundings between 1904 and 1906, looking jointly for suitable motifs in nature. As their goal was shared, their paintings are similar to each other, but the expression of their rendering is rather different.
Grohar’s expression was the softer and the most lyrical of all, and his way of rendering was outstanding, since he evenly applied paint with the spatula in thick layers onto the canvas from one edge to the other, leaving parts of canvas unpainted at some points. With subdued grey-bluish and yellowish tones he created the atmosphere of tranquillity, typical of cold winter mornings, when the entire land is covered with a thick snow blanket and when the early sunbeams begin to penetrate the atmosphere.
