Born 1896 in Ferrara, died 1956 in Milan. He was also an important writer and poet. For many years he lived in Paris, where he was in contact with the Surrealist painters and where he studied the works of the Impressionists. His style is actually a combination of a sort of Impressionism without naturalistic goals and the rapid strokes of the brush characteristic of some 18th century Venetian painters, for example Giovanni Antonio and Francesco Guardi. His numerous still lifes, portraits, landscapes and interiors have great suggestive power due to their precise colour relationships, which are often brilliantly clear.
